Conduct pre-drive checks on a light motor vehicle.

This is required at the start of the VicRoads Drive Test to ensure the driver knows how to operate the essential controls and all vehicle safety functions are working.

With Instructor at front of car:

• Operate Left Indicator.  Instructor confirms Front Left Signal Light is flashing.  Turn off.
• Operate Right Indicator.  Instructor confirms Front Right Signal Light is flashing.  Turn off.
• Operate Headlights, low and high beams.  Instructor confirms all both headlights and high beams are working.  Leave headlights on.
• Operate Hazard Lights.  Instructor confirms that both Front signals lights are flashing.  Leave hazards on for Instructor to check rear lights.
• Operate windscreen wiper and washer.  Instructor confirms both are working.  Turn off.

Instructor moves to rear of car:

• Instructor confirms both rear hazard lights are flashing.  Turn off hazards.
• Operate Left Indicator.  Instructor confirms Rear Left Signal Light is flashing.  Turn off.
• Operate Right Indicator.  Instructor confirms Rear Right Signal Light is flashing.  Turn off.
• Operate Brake.  Instructor confirms all (3) brake lights are working.

Instructor moves to drivers window::

• Identify/Point to the handbrake.
• Identify/Point to the front & rear demisters.
• Identify/Point to the horn.

OTHER – GENERAL

1. Explains reasons for conducting pre-trip inspections.
2. Where necessary refers to the driver’s handbook.
3. Applies personal safety precautions.
4. Follows a logical sequence for checks.
5. Records and/or rectifies any faults on the vehicle checklist.

UNDER BONNET CHECKS

1. Checks engine oil level for level (between ‘add’ and ‘full’) and colour.
2. Checks power steering oil level and condition.
3. Checks coolant level and condition (additives).
4. Checks condition and security of hoses.
5. Checks condition and tension of belts.
6. Checks for general leaks around engine.
7. Checks brake fluid level.
8. Checks automatic transmission fluid level (where appropriate).
9. Checks windscreen washer fluid level and additive.
10. Checks battery for fluid level (if appropriate), corrosion and security.

INTERIOR CHECKS

1. Checks park brake on/gear shift in neutral.
2. Checks warrant of fitness, vehicle licence and RUC licence (if appropriate) are current and displayed
3. correctly.
4. Checks rear-view mirror adjustment and cleanliness.
5. Checks seat position so that lower back is fully supported and arms are slightly bent when holding the
6. steering wheel correctly.
7. Checks position of steering wheel and adjusts where appropriate.
8. Checks safety belts for damage and operation (retractor, coupling).
9. Turns key to ‘acc’ position.
10. Checks operation of wipers and washers, even if not raining.
11. Checks for cleanliness of windscreen and windows.
12. Checks operation of horn.
13. Checks door releases and locks for operation.

EXTERIOR CHECKS

1. Checks head lights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators and number plate light for operation, damage and cleanliness.
2. Checks tyres for side wall damage, pressure and tread.
3. Checks for loose wheel nuts and visible damage.
4. Checks for panel and/or glass damage.
5. Checks for oil and water leaks under vehicle.
6. Checks condition and security of spare wheel and tools.
7. Checks security of registration plates.
