Negotiate a steep ascent. Negotiate a steep descent.

GENERAL

  1. Identifies, explains and reacts correctly to road signs that indicate steep gradients.
  2. Explains and, if necessary, uses slow vehicle bays and passing lanes on hills.
  3. Demonstrates a patient response to slower vehicles on grades.
  4. Checks following traffic on approach to grades.

STEEP ASCENTS

  1. As road speed drops, selects a lower gear to maintain road speed (manual).
  2. Uses the tachometer (if fitted) effectively to monitor engine speed.
  3. Maintains correct following distances behind slower vehicles.
  4. Makes use of available lanes to minimise interference to following traffic.
  5. Overtakes (where appropriate) safely.
  6. Maintains correct lane position.
  7. Displays courtesy to other road users.

STEEP DESCENTS

  1. Selects suitable gear (manual and automatic) to reflect road conditions and maximise engine braking effect.
  2. Uses brakes to control engine rpm and/or road speed.
  3. Monitors tachometer (where fitted) to manage engine speed.
  4. Brakes to reduce road speed before making any additional down shifts on the gradient.
  5. Uses slow vehicle bays or lanes to allow faster traffic past.
  6. Maintains correct lane position
  7. Displays courtesy to other road users.
