Enter, leave and drive safely and efficiently on a motorway.

GENERAL

  1. Explains the basic rules of motorway driving.
  2. Identifies potential hazards, predicts developments, decides on a course of action and acts on that decision.
  3. Applies the system of vehicle control in all hazard avoidance situations.

ROAD CONDITIONS

  1. Adopts, and maintains, correct lane position.
  2. Checks mirrors and blindspots and indicates for at least 3 seconds prior to any lane change.
  3. Observes all road markings and reacts early to all motorway signs.
  4. Accelerates to motorway speed (when travelling in merge lane), checks mirrors and blindspots, indicates for at least 3 seconds and selects appropriate gap before merging with other traffic on the motorway.
  5. Identifies exit, adjusts lane position early, indicates intention to leave the motorway for at least 3 seconds and exits safely.

TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

  1. Applies 2-second rule.
  2. Overtakes slower traffic in the same lane safely and in accordance with traffic law.
  3. Applies appropriate scanning techniques around the vehicle (to the sides, behind, 12-second search ahead and where appropriate shoulder checks).
  4. Stays left in multiple lanes.
  5. Avoids unnecessary lane changes.
  6. Identifies and, where necessary, adjusts speed for traffic joining the motorway.
  7. Identifies and, where necessary, adjusts speed for traffic leaving the motorway.
  8. Gap selection appropriate in all tasks.

VEHICLE CONDITIONS

  1. Vehicle meets warrant of fitness standard.
  2. Driving performance reflects an appreciation of the power and transmission options of the vehicle.
  3. Vehicle speed reflects the driving conditions and posted speed limits.
  4. Maintains appropriate road position in all driving situations.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

  1. Driving performance reflects the prevailing weather conditions.

LIGHT CONDITIONS

  1. Takes steps to minimise the effects of any sun strike or glare.
  2. Uses vehicle head lights in any low light conditions.

DRIVER CONDITIONS

  1. Displays a courteous and patient driving style.
  2. Displays effective observation and manipulative skills.
