Drive safely and efficiently on a rural road.

GENERAL

  1. Identifies potential hazards, predicts developments, decides ona course of action and acts on that decision.
  2. Applies the system of vehicle control in all hazard avoidance situations.
  3. Anticipates driving conditions and adjusts driving behaviours to the conditions. Able to stop in the distance of clear visible road ahead.
  4. Abides by all permanent and temporary speed signs.

ROAD CONDITIONS

  1. Adopts, and maintains, appropriate lane or road position.
  2. Checks mirrors and blindspots and indicates for at least 3 seconds prior to any change in direction that
  3. causes the vehicle to cross the road centre line.
  4. Observes all road markings and reacts early to all warning and advisory signs.
  5. Ascends and descends hills in an appropriate gear.
  6. Negotiates corners in accordance with advisory speed signs, applying the correct cornering line and
  7. technique.
  8. Where appropriate, slows for narrow or one-lane bridges and obeys any right-of-way signs.
  9. Positions vehicle to avoid contact with bridge structure or any oncoming vehicles.
  10. Adopts correct turning positions.
  11. Observes all controls or applies the give way rule correctly.
  12. Indicates intention to turn at least 3 seconds in advance.
  13. Reacts early to permanent and temporary warning signs.
  14. Observes and complies with any changes to the speed limit, including any temporary speed limits, and
  15. obeys all controls.
  16. Identifies unsealed roads by sign or road discolouration.
  17. Reduces speed on unsealed roads.
  18. Uses left lane in passing lanes unless overtaking.
  19. Where necessary, adjusts speed to allow faster traffic past.

TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

  1. Applies appropriate scanning techniques around the vehicle (to the sides, behind, 12-second search
  2. ahead, and where appropriate shoulder checks).
  3. Applies 2-second rule.
  4. Overtakes safely and in accordance with legal requirements.
  5. Maintains correct lane position and speed.
  6. Monitors overtaking traffic.
  7. Where necessary reduces speed and applies correct overtaking procedures in response to cyclists and
  8. pedestrians.
  9. Adjusts speed to avoid passing oncoming vehicles and cyclists/pedestrians at the same time.
  10. Reacts to any signs that might indicate stock on the road.
  11. If stock is encountered, slows down or covers brake and, if necessary, prepares to stop.
  12. Observes any requests or directions from drovers.
  13. Applies cautious approach to slow farm machinery.
  14. Anticipates abrupt, or late, overtaking manoeuvres from other vehicles when encountering oncoming
  15. farm vehicles or machinery.
  16. Does not exceed 20km/h when passing a stationary school bus (from either direction).

VEHICLE CONDITIONS

  1. Vehicle meets warrant of fitness standard.
  2. Driving performance reflects an appreciation of the power and gear selection options of the vehicle.
  3. Vehicle speed reflects the driving conditions.
  4. Maintains appropriate road position in all driving situations.

WEATHER CONDITIONS

  1. Driving performance reflects the prevailing weather conditions.

LIGHT CONDITIONS

  1. Takes steps to minimise the effects of any sun strike or glare.
  2. Uses vehicle head lights in any low light conditions.

DRIVER CONDITIONS

  1. Displays a courteous driving style.
  2. Displays an unrushed, patient driving style.
  3. Applies knowledge and skills to produce a competent driving standard.
  4. Explains simple steps to avoid driver fatigue.
  5. Avoids internal and external distractions that might affect vehicle control and observation technique.
  6. Maintains two-handed steering unless operating other controls.
