Conduct pre-trip checks on a light motor vehicle.
GENERAL
- Explains reasons for conducting pre-trip inspections.
- Where necessary refers to the driver’s handbook.
- Applies personal safety precautions.
- Follows a logical sequence for checks.
- Records and/or rectifies any faults on the vehicle checklist.
UNDER BONNET CHECKS
- Checks engine oil level for level (between ‘add’ and ‘full’) and colour.
- Checks power steering oil level and condition.
- Checks coolant level and condition (additives).
- Checks condition and security of hoses.
- Checks condition and tension of belts.
- Checks for general leaks around engine.
- Checks brake fluid level.
- Checks automatic transmission fluid level (where appropriate).
- Checks windscreen washer fluid level and additive.
- Checks battery for fluid level (if appropriate), corrosion and security.
INTERIOR CHECKS
- Checks park brake on/gear shift in neutral.
- Checks warrant of fitness, vehicle licence and RUC licence (if appropriate) are current and displayed
- correctly.
- Checks rear-view mirror adjustment and cleanliness.
- Checks seat position so that lower back is fully supported and arms are slightly bent when holding the
- steering wheel correctly.
- Checks position of steering wheel and adjusts where appropriate.
- Checks safety belts for damage and operation (retractor, coupling).
- Turns key to ‘acc’ position.
- Checks operation of wipers and washers, even if not raining.
- Checks for cleanliness of windscreen and windows.
- Checks operation of horn.
- Checks door releases and locks for operation.
EXTERIOR CHECKS
- Checks head lights, tail lights, brake lights, indicators and number plate light for operation, damage and cleanliness.
- Checks tyres for side wall damage, pressure and tread.
- Checks for loose wheel nuts and visible damage.
- Checks for panel and/or glass damage.
- Checks for oil and water leaks under vehicle.
- Checks condition and security of spare wheel and tools.
- Checks security of registration plates.
